“For ought that I could ever read,
Could ever hear by tale or history,
The course of true love never did run smooth.”
—Midsummer Night’s Dream 1.1.134
William Shakespeare’s renowned tragedy Romeo and Juliet completes our theatrical season. In this classic, the atmosphere of violence and hate created by the feuding houses of Montague and Capulet is contrasted with the youthful idealism and impetuosity of the main characters. Where young Romeo and Juliet can see only the possibilities of love, their families and friends are blinded by the long and ongoing animosity that defines the feuding households.
