The rocky path to love is fraught with both chaos and hilarity in Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Star-Spangled Girl. Norman and Andy live in San Francisco at the height of the rebellious hippie era, where they publish a subversive magazine exposing the failures of the current political status quo. When an energetic and patriotic young woman moves into the adjacent apartment, Norman falls madly and irrationally in love. Devoting himself to showering her with unwanted attention, he has no time or interest in writing articles for the magazine, leaving his roommate frantically trying to come up with money to pay the rent and put off their creditors. Written in 1967, Simon’s comedy deftly examines the absurdities of love as well as the nature of patriotic zeal.
