Academic Integrity

For Students

Life as a student is complicated.  You have a lot of goals and expectations for yourself and you probably feel like other people have a lot of goals and expectations for you as well!  Few students begin a course or start researching a paper with the idea that they will cheat.  But somewhere in the pressure of due dates and late nights they make the wrong choices.  Sometimes students are shocked when their professors confront them and tell them that they have cheated – they did what their friends did, or what they had done in high school, and although they thought the behavior might be a little “gray,” it wasn’t really cheating!

The best way to avoid problems is to develop good academic and time management skills so that you won’t be tempted by dishonest shortcuts.i

Four basic steps all Bethel students should take are:

1. Understand Bethel University’s Policy on Academic Honesty .

2. Make sure you know exactly how to produce honest academic work

3. Talk to your instructor if you are unsure whether a particular project or action is appropriate.

4. Discourage others from violating standards of academic integrity.
