The AESC faculty is happy to work with students who are trying to improve their approach to study skills, time management, and other academic issues. Meeting once means you will walk away with some solid suggestions. Making time to meet two or three times usually means that students successfully improve their behavior and grades. Request a appointment by filling out a “Request for Help” form and stopping by the Academic Enrichment & Support Center located in HC 324 to sign-up for an appointment.
Typical test-taking topics include:
- How to improve test-taking skills on a multiple-choice tests
- How to study for and write essay tests
- A close and careful analysis of previous tests to identify patterns & plan for success
- How to "unlearn" the behaviors of test panic
- How to anticipate what a prof will ask on a test
Typical time-management topics include:
- How to choose a good calendar/datebook for your personality and habits
- Learning to use calendars and lists effectively
- Goal-setting and accountability (meet throughout the semester)
- Setting priorities
- Setting priorities for the end of the semester and exams
Typical study-skill topics include:
- How to read and remember what you read
- How to take good lecture notes and use them effectively
- How to assess your learning styles and make them work for you
- How to communicate with a prof you find difficult
- Coping with motivation issues
Typical learning-styles topics include:
- Identifying your personal learning style
- How to approach a class when your learning style doesn't match the prof's teaching style
