Professional Experience

Prior to my current position, I served for seventeen years in urban multicultural settings in Minneapolis—St. Paul, Minnesota as the president of the Twin Cities Urban Reconciliation Network (TURN), the executive director of the City Gate Project, and the senior pastor at a multiracial congregation. I have also served at congregations in Washington, DC, and New York City. I worked at the Covenant House Times Square shelter for homeless and runaway youth in New York City. I am an ordained minister in the Church of God (headquarters in Anderson, Indiana).

International Work

In 1999, my work began to include an international focus when I participated as a McKnight Foundation Fellow at the Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria—an event that convened 70 people from 39 different nations to discuss issues of race and ethnicity. I have since been to South Africa on nine occasions speaking on reconciliation and the multiculturalism of the Bible. I have also visited Egypt, France, Guatemala, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Thailand. I have been to Palestine and Israel twice to learn about the conflict and develop networks with people and organizations working for peace, reconciliation, social justice, and human rights.

Family

I have been married since 1984, and I am the father of two children: a daughter who is enrolled in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California and a son in high school.
