HR 4-Year Plan / HR Links

Welcome to the Human Resource Management Program's Homepage

Organizations of all sizes and purposes are finding the management of human resources to be integral to their success or failure. They are also finding that what it takes to be successful changes rapidly--one year the labor market dictates that we try new and inventive strategies to get applicants interested in working for our company; the next year we have 100 resumes for every open position and our focus switches to choosing the best one from the pile. The break-neck pace of societal and technological change demands a staff that learns and adapts quickly - and a human resource function that enables them to do that effectively.

THE PROGRAM

Bethel University and the Human Resource Management emphasis will prepare you to be an effective leader and an innovative manager within the field. Upon completion, you will be prepared for a wide variety of human resource management functions. The program is designed to develop students to lead this rapid change within their workplace. We seek to provide students with the broad foundation they need for a career in Human Resource Management. In the coursework students learn both the theory and practice of staffing, training, development, compensation, organizational theory, labor and employee relations, and health and safety. These topics prepare them to begin a career in HRM.

Your involvement in the program and the greater Bethel community with stretch you academically, socially and spiritually. You will be taught, prepared, and encouraged to incorporate Christian ethical practices into your life and subsequently your professional career.

HR students take a core set of business courses and specific courses related to the HR discipline. See the college catalog for specific details at: http://www.bethel.edu/college/catalog/acadprog/dept/business.html

Many of our students are able to incorporate a second emphasis into their four-year program. Many students hoping to pursue a career in accounting, finance, or marketing have found that a secondary HRM emphasis better prepares them to enter a management position later in their career. The ability to diversify and hone skills proves beneficial for students within the program upon graduation.

HR INTERNSHIPS

HR students are required to complete at least one internship. Students find that internships allow them to see how organizations operate and also create more value on their resumes when they begin to look for their first full-time job.  Students can earn up to nine credits with internships during their junior and senior years. However, internships can also be completed on a non-credit basis. Most internships are completed during the school year, are part-time, and are paid. See the Department’s website for further information on internships at: http://cas.bethel.edu/dept/business-economics/internship/index

FACULTY

The HRM faculty, which consists of Professors Bethany Opsata and Joyce Lemay, focus on teaching and advising students. They are active in their fields in a variety of ways: through ongoing consulting projects with businesses; research into issues critical to the profession; and attending state and national conferences and seminars to stay current with trends in the profession and management education.

You will find your professors actively involved in your life. The faculty provides an environment in which friendships built on mutual respect and a devotion to business education is made clear throughout your college carrier.

BETHEL BUSINESS & ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION

The Bethel Business & Economics Association can be a vital part of your educational, professional, and community experience at Bethel. This student-led association helps develop a spirit of friendship and cooperation among students in all business and economics disciplines via organized site tours, campus presentations, and social gatherings.
