Research Interests

My research interests include the study of potential biomarkers for human reproductive cancers. My current area of investigation is prostate cancer (PCa). Human prostatic carcinoma accounts for 30% of cancer cases diagnosed in American men. The 5-year survival rate for a patient with localized PCa is 100%, but for those diagnosed with cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastasis), the survival rate drops to only 34%. This significant decline in prognosis with the onset of metastasis has highlighted the need for identifying metastatic biomarkers, in addition to currently utilized cancer transformation biomarkers. My previous research has identified zinc finger E-box binding protein (ZEB-1) as a possible biomarker for PCa metastasis. The expression of this gene has been shown to be regulated by androgen and to decrease sharply at metastasis. The goal of my current work is to investigate the effects of flutamide (a clinical anti-androgen) and dihydrotestosterone (an androgen) on the expression of ZEB-1. Ongoing studies aim to confirm the feasibility of using ZEB-1 as a PCa metastatic biomarker, utilizing the cutting-edge biochemical technique known as real-time polymerase chain reaction.

Teaching Interests

My principal teaching interests lie in the area of Biochemistry. I have taught courses including: Biochemistry I and II, Principles of Biology, Introduction to General, Organic, and Biochemistry I and II, Chemistry Junior Seminar, and Forensics: The Science of Crime.

Brief Biography

I was born in India, grew up in Minnesota, and attended college and graduate school in the midwest (Bethel College, UW-Madison, U of MN). My favorite hobby is traveling and so, whenever possible, I try to see the country and the world. I visited Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Israel, Jordan, and India as a Bethel student, and Spain, Portugal, and various other European countries as recent vacations. This Fall, I traveled to the French Riviera and Paris for a conference, and have many plans to see other countries in the near future. I've also visited a number of U.S. cities in my travels. When I am actually not traveling, I enjoy reading, writing, and playing tennis.
