Chemistry B.A. & Chemistry B.S.

Chemistry, as the central science, is concerned with the nature of matter. Chemistry is founded in mathematics and based upon physical principles but extends to the study of biomolecules and serves as the foundation of the life sciences. Chemists are involved in such diverse fields as material science, biomedical engineering, laser spectroscopy, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical synthesis. Chemistry is theoretical yet practical, emphasizing analytical skills, creativity, and problem-solving.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree is particularly appropriate for students considering advanced training at a professional school or a career in the health sciences. The program consists of nine chemistry courses along with courses in math, physics, and general education. In addition, the junior and senior seminars serve as the formal experiences for studying research methods, presenting research, surveying career options, hearing outside speakers, and participating in activities in preparation for graduation. The B.A. degree is versatile and marketable; some of our recent graduates have gone on to medical, dental, optometry, and chiropractic school; other have pursued chemical research and sales opportunities. Since the B.A. degree is only one chemistry course beyond the Biochemistry/Molecular Biology major, a viable option for many students is to double-major, adding strength to their credentials.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is a more rigorous academic program of study that includes 12 chemistry courses in addition to the seminar sequence, along with supporting courses in math, physics, and general education. The Bachelor of Science degree is recommended for students interested in employment immediately after graduation, in graduate school in chemistry, or in pursuing an advanced degree in chemical engineering. The B.S. degree provides a strong background in chemistry attractive to employers and graduate/professional schools.

Students trained in chemistry are prepared (1) with the analytical skills to succeed in the employment marketplace, in graduate schools, and in professional schools and (2) with a worldview that integrates the Christian faith with life.
