Chemistry Department

Secondary Education Chemistry Licensure

Chemistry students have a variety of career options available. One of these opportunities is teaching chemistry at the secondary (high school) level or the teaching of general science at the 5-12 grades. Over the years, a continuing strength at Bethel has been the education program. The college is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching. The education program can be combined with the sciences to prepare you to function as both a teacher and a scientist. Students who complete the program will be licensed to teach both high school chemistry and general science in grades 5 through 12, two marketable areas. Students who complete three additional chemistry electives can also complete a B.A. in Chemistry along with the teacher licensure. This option increases your future flexibility.

The program is large because of the state mandated requirements in both education and the sciences. The program can be completed in four years, but it requires careful planning and a heavy load each semester. The first year and a half is basically the same for all chemistry programs, which means you do not have to elect this option immediately.

Should you consider this program? If you enjoy the challenge of teaching others, are fascinated by the sciences, and want an opportunity to influence students, consider the chemistry education program.
