NFA: Dramatic Interpretation Description

Dramatic interpretation will be offered at the 2008 and 2009 NFA National tournament. The following is the description of the event, along with the rules. These are the rules that will be in effect for the national tournament.

In an effort to accomplish two goals:

  • to increase the attendance of schools at the NFA National Championship Tournament (by adding a new event); and
  • to balance the educational and competitive opportunities of both public speakers and oral interpreters (by adding a new oral interpretation event);

We propose the following:

  • The NFA National Tournament will add the event Dramatic Interpretation (DI), for a 2-year period. At the end of this period, NFA will evaluate the impact of this addition on the Tournament, and determine whether the event will be continued.
  • DI will be added to Flight C, in combination with Poetry and Persuasion. This event will count for Pentathlon and Team Sweepstakes. Individual awards will be presented to quarterfinalists, semifinalists, and finalists.
  • Entries in DI will qualify for the Tournament following procedures in line with those used for other individual events (see By-Laws).
  • We see it as an advantage that, in order to maximize qualification opportunities, students will be more likely to enter DI at those regular-season tournaments which offer this event.
