English Department

English Department News and Annual Events

The English Department has an active schedule of events that usually includes one or two events per month. It's enough interaction within the department to foster a nurturing learning environment, but not so much that students feel pressured with too many events.

Ficpoe   A monthly event where English majors, and other Bethel students can gather to celebrate their writing.

English Department Celebration   A chance for the English Department to celebrate with its graduating seniors.

Shakespeare's Birthday   An annual tradition for the Shakespeare class.

Arbor Day Celebration   The Environmental Writing class, taught by Dr. Becknell, has made an annual tradition of planting a tree to celebrate Arbor Day.

Coeval Readings   Periodic readings of Bethel's biannual literary magazine, the Coeval.

Education Career Fair   Each spring, usually in April, graduating English Education majors are given the opportunity to meet potential employers.

English Folkdance   engdan005_jpg.jpg

To move 17th and 18th century literature out of the classroom and into a broader cultural context, Professor Daniel Ritchie occasionally takes students to the Tapestry Folkdance Center in Minneapolis. In this December 2001 dance, Bethel students researched costumes, food, and even etiquette before doing the dances you may have seen in the film version of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. -Dr. Ritchie
