Daniel Ritchie, who teaches in the English department, has directed Bethel's Humanities Program since its beginning in 2002. In 2006 he won Bethel's faculty excellence award for teaching. He is directing a 2007 Summer Institute, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, on "The Continuing Significance of Tocqueville's Democracy in America." Dan has edited two books on Edmund Burke, and his third book, Reconstructing Literature in an Ideological Age, was published in 1996 by Wm B. Eerdmans. A fourth book, under contract with Baylor University Press is tentatively titled Questioning Postmodernism, Questioning Enlightenment. He has worked as a magazine and newspaper journalist in New York and Kentucky. He enjoys the outdoors and playing the piano. A specialist in British literature of the 1700s, Dan is glad that our era has revived that glorious invention of his beloved 18th century, the coffeehouse. |
