Humanities Program

A significant element of Humanities involves trips to local theatres, art galleries, museums, and concerts to experience first-hand the works of art and literature we study. These events include:

Museum Events

Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Religious Culture Events

An Evening of Medieval Spirituality—In the fall, we spend an evening participating in elements of monastic prayer and worship. We often invite a monk or nun to discuss their decision to take monastic vows. The evening concludes with the staging of a medieval play, performed by students in the program.

Performance Art Events

Live Performance of Shakespeare at the Guthrie

Live Performance of St. Paul Chamber Orchestra

Music and Dance from the Era of Jane Austen—In the spring, an evening of 18th century dance is planned. Students complement their reading of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice by experiencing the informal, easily learned country dances that figure prominently in the novel.

During the sophomore year, Humanities Program students who are studying the roaring ’20s visit the historic James J. Hill House for a taste of the music and dance of the jazz era.

History Events

Students visit the history venues during their sophomore year in conjunction with a research paper on American culture.
