Interests & Activities
The parts of the discipline
of history that most intrigue and fascinate me are:
- economics and social justice questions
- the function and role of religion in political
decision making
- comparative political revolutions ("What causes
change?")
In the classroom I have the most fun talking about:
- topics that have diverse historical interpretations
- "Why do people of faith come to different interpretations
on political and economic issues of the day?"
- understanding Christian heroes; people that
stood up against the evil of their day
I am currently working on:
- Comparative evangelical political theology
- My Grandmother's poetry, the poetry of the Swedish
immigrant experience
- Chapter of a book about the history of Bethel
College
The interesting things that I've done in the past
are:
- Served on the St. Paul school board for ten
years
- Helped coordinate and develop the celebration
of Bethel's 125th Anniversary
- Spent a month in St. Petersburg, Russia
Books that have especially shaped who I am as a
historian include:
Phillip Hallie, Lest
Innocent Blood Be Shed
William Miller, All is Grace: The Spirituality
of Dorothy Day
Robert Conquest, The
Great Terror
Martin Marty, Pilgrims
in Their Own Land: 500 Years of Religion in America
Vincent Harding, Martin
Luther King: The Inconvenient Hero
Will Cambel, Brother to a Dragon Fly
Charles Marsh, God's
Long Summer: Stories of Faith and Civil Rights
Frances Willard, How
I Learned to Ride the Bicycle
Richard Foster, Streams
of Living Water: Celebrating the Great Traditions
of Christian Faith
William Estep, The
Anabaptist Story
Marian Wright Edelman, The
Measure of our Success
Advice I'd give a prospective college student would
be:
- Commit yourself to life long learning.
- Find a way to enjoy reading.
- Always seek ways to be a faithful disciple of
Christ.
