Participants, major faculty, and consultants will have a $150 book allowance for this institute.  Of that amount, the cost of our Reading Packet will be deducted. (It may cost $50-$60, depending on the price of permissions.) The packet will be sent to you in advance of the institute.  All participants are expected to purchase the following four books:

1. Tocqueville, Alexis de. Democracy in America. Trans and ed. Harvey C. Mansfield and Delba Winthrop. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000. ($20, ISBN 0226805360) All readings from Democracy in America are drawn from this edition.

2. Eberly, Don, ed. The Essential Civil Society Reader. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2000. ($22.95 ISBN 0847697193)

3. Tipton, Steven M. and John Witte, Jr., eds. The Family Transformed: religion, values, and society in American life. Washington: Georgetown University Press, 2005. $26.95 ISBN 1589010663).

4. Zuckert, Michael and Thomas Engeman, eds. Protestantism and the American Founding (Notre Dame: Notre Dame University Press, 2004) $25 ISBN 0268027684.
