Premedical Training

Medical School Prerequisites

All medical schools require the Medical College Admissions Test or MCAT as a prerequisite for admissions and your potential for admission is strongly tied to your performance on the one-day exam.  Prerequisites to most medical schools, and recommended prerequisites to do well on the MCAT exam include the following courses:
 
BIO112D Introduction to Molecular and Cellular Biology 
BIO113D Introduction to Organismic Biology 
CHE111D General Chemistry I
CHE212 General Chemistry II
*Note: CHE210D Accelerated General Chemistry can substitute for CHE111D
and CHE212, but students should check with the schools to which they are
 applying to verify this.

CHE221 Organic Chemistry I
CHE222 Organic Chemistry II
BIO381 or CHE381 Biochemistry
PHY200D or PHY290D Introductory Physics I or General Physics I
PHY205 or PHY295 Introductory Physics II or General Physics II
A minimum of coursework in mathematics through algebra and trigonometry, or pre-calculus.  Some schools may recommend calculus.
Completion of a bachelor’s degree before entrance.
 
The following represent schools frequently applied to by Bethel students, and the additional requirements of each school for application:

University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and Duluth Campuses

Two additional upper level courses in Biology or Chemistry (300 or above)
    One upper level humanities or social sciences course with an extensive
writing component.

North Dakota

An additional course in psychology or sociology
    College writing
    A second course in language arts (speech, English, etc.)

South Dakota

At minimum of two semesters of Mathematics

Iowa

College Writing and an English literature course
    Four additional courses in social and behavior sciences and humanities
that hopefully have a significant writing component.

University of Wisconsin

Upper division (300 or above) course in biology 
    MAT131M Statistical Analysis (or PSY230M Introduction to Statistical
Methods and Experimental Design
    Calculus is recommended

Medical College of Wisconsin

College Writing plus a second English course.

 Mayo School of Medicine

 No additional requirements
