Generalist Social Work Practice

The social work curriculum thoroughly identifies generalist social work practice as our objective. It is essential that all persons involved with the social work program be informed of the understanding of generalist social work practice. The following definition of generalist practice has been adopted by the Bethel University Social Work Program.

Generalist social work practice is guided by the NASW Code of Ethics and is committed to improving the well being of individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations and furthering the goals of social justice.

Generalist social work practitioners:

  • Work in a variety of social work and host settings;
  • View clients and client systems from a strengths perspective in order to recognize, support, and build upon the innate capabilities of all human beings;
  • Use a professional helping process to engage, assess, broker services, advocate, counsel, educate, organize with and on behalf of client and client systems; and
  • Apply empirical evidence and evaluate service outcomes in order to continually improve the provision and quality of services most appropriate to client needs.
