2007 Faculty Excellence Awards

Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching 2007

Kirk Freeman 2007 Kirk Freeman
Professor of Art

Kirk has consistently inspired his students to do incredible work. Not only does he teach with enthusiasm and expertise; he also motivates his students to have the same enthusiasm and desire to learn. Beginning students reach levels of ability that usually show up in second- or third-level studio classes. He allows students to learn through trial and error, and he teaches with a belief in the long view of student development. Kirk is engaged in his medium, engaged as a teacher of that medium, and genuinely engaged with the students in his classes. Kirk's ability to seamlessly integrate his faith and learning is evident in his attention to individual students, taking all the tasks of a shared studio space seriously, and creating a teaching environment where both struggle and success are cared about.

Faculty Excellence Award in Scholarship 2007

Paul Eddy 2007 Paul Eddy
Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies

Paul has authored or co-authored three books, ranging from a highly technical monograph from a highly respected academic publisher, to a widely used classroom text. Paul also has a dozen major academic articles or chapters in books to his credit, and is acknowledged as absolutely first-rate in New Testament scholarship. He has demonstrated the ability to take his technical scholarship and apply it on a popular level. Paul is an original thinker, which allows him to develop insights that seem obvious once he has articulated them, but were utterly opaque before he did so. Paul is raising issues that have never seen the light of day, which will fundamentally change how we view the historicity of the sources for "historical Jesus" research.
