Program Description
At the New York Center for Art and Media Studies (NYCAMS), the city will be your classroom. NYCAMS is located within walking distance from some of the most prestigious galleries and museums in the world; these extraordinary cultural resources will be an integral aspect of your learning experience. In addition, internships with internationally renowned artists and institutions will provide you with unique opportunities to experience and engage professionally with the arts. As an epicenter of contemporary art, New York attracts artists from all over the world to engage in the continuing cultural dialog. NYCAMS students immerse themselves in the unique opportunities and experiences that this dynamic and diverse urban community has to offer. The program provides an academically challenging and structured environment, where young artists will both encounter contemporary trends in the visual arts, and learn how to engage the culture with their faith and creativity. NYCAMS faculty are committed to equipping students for a successful career in the arts.
Courses
ARH340 History of Christianity and the Visual Arts 4 credits
A study of the Theology, History and Practice of integrating the Arts, the Christian faith and Culture; this course will concentrate on discussion of the readings, with frequent visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the studios of internationally known artists.
ARH346 Contemporary Art History in New York 4 credits
This art history course is a chronological overview of the major themes and movements in modern art beginning with Pollack’s “drip paintings” up to contemporary issues in art. The focus is on placing contemporary themes in their recent historic context.
ART375 Directed Open Studio 4 credits
The focus of the directed open studio course is on developing the student’s critical thinking process and creative expression. Choice of medium and aesthetic direction are made individually. Guest lecturers, readings, gallery field trips and weekly class critiques will provide students with valuable resources to develop their personal visions.
ART481 Internship in the Arts 4 credits
The internship will be an educational and practical experience in applied understanding and skill in an off-campus, professional setting. An internship can be arranged in advertising studios, art consulting agencies, artist’s studios, art galleries and museums and other arts organizations.
Location
The Art World of New York City becomes the classroom for participants. The availability of large exhibition spaces, the convergence of diverse art movements, and more than 600 galleries provide an inspiring structure for learning and interaction. With studio space in East Chelsea and housing in Brooklyn Heights, participants will engage in the city and its thriving international art community.
Studios / Classroom Space
The New York Center for Art and Media Studies is located a few blocks east of the Chelsea gallery district in a vibrant, multi-faceted commercial neighborhood in Manhattan. The space is a just south of the Empire State Building and is easily accessible by two subway lines. The turn of the century loft building provides a 24 hours doorman and three passenger elevators that open directly into the studio space. The 8,000 square foot loft has windows on four sides, which provide great natural light and exciting views of the city. It serves as the primary intersection point of the program and accommodates the following facilities:
Accommodations
The historic Hotel St. George in Brooklyn Heights is owned and operated by Educational Housing Services. Located in a quaint residential neighborhood, bordering the picturesque Brooklyn Promenade, this state of the art dormitory facility provides a safe and welcoming living environment. Amenities include furnished rooms (double), private bath, 24-hour security, full-time RA staff, and laundry and fitness facilities.
Requirements
Cost & Financial Aid
Participants are billed $15,900 (valid fall 2008). Covered expenses include tuition and fees, housing, on-site support of program director and resident assistant, and internship coordination. Expenses not covered include meals, transportation to the program, NYC transportation (subway passes, etc.), art supplies, and other personal supplies, including spending money.
Financial aid applies for Bethel students (with the exception of work-study and Bethel performance scholarships, i.e. orchestra, forensics). Non-Bethel students should contact their home school’s financial aid office to determine billing / financial aid procedures.
Program Dates
Participants will begin orientation in NYC on August 30. Classes run from September 2-December 10.
