Using artistic gifts and creative minds, art students are here to understand, relate to, and shape the world through artistic, visual communication.

Students in the Department of Art at Bethel encounter a range of disciplines including art history, contemporary studio practice, education, and exhibition. We focus on honing technical skills alongside creative ideas within and across traditional media. Through the making of objects, students have the freedom to explore knowledge and truth—and then communicate that truth through their work.

We serve students pursuing a profession in the arts and the creative life through several degrees in the areas of art history, education, and studio art. In all programs, students can choose to develop an emphasis, including graphic design, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, or art history.

Our professors are expert practitioners, each with their own areas of emphasis, who live to teach and mentor. They drive students not only to hone their skills as artists, but also to explore what it means to follow Christ within the art community.

Beyond a full set of course offerings in the visual arts, our department also manages Bethel’s art galleries and an off-campus study program in New York City.
