Generalist Social Work Practice

The social work curriculum thoroughly identifies generalist social work practice as our objective. It is essential that all persons involved with the Social Work Program be informed of the understanding of generalist social work practice. The following definition of generalist practice has been adopted by the Bethel University Social Work Program.

Generalist social work practice is guided by ethical principles and committed to promote the well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities through a range of prevention and intervention methods.

Generalist practitioners:

  • Are grounded in the liberal arts and the person and environment construct.
  • Use a professional helping process that incorporates strengths and resiliency.
  • Apply critical thinking and research-informed practice.
  • Incorporate diversity and advocate for human rights and social and economic justice.

~Adapted from EPAS 2008 Generalist Practice Definition.
